Habitat

During the summer term of 2020 I worked within a design team for my Design Process Context and Systems Course. Our team was assigned to design an intervention which was a component of the bedtime routine. The team chose to address phone use prior to bed and find ways to discourage the use of electronics immediately prior to bed in accordance with expert recommendations.

The team proposed a system which provided a tile-able phone docking station to live in the bathroom. This would encourage users to leave their phone in the dock overnight when they are preparing for bed in the bathroom. To more firmly anchor this device in the bathroom, the tiles were given a variety of functions which a user might desire in the bathroom, such as holding a toothbrush. In addition to the components in the bathroom, the team proposed a bedside component to act as an alarm clock. The bedside component uses a lit exterior to help use light to wake users and has a book storage compartment to promote healthy, phone free, alternatives prior to bed.

My contributions to the team were centered on the design of the physical components and the creation of the 3D model and renders. In addition to the physical components proposed, the team also designed and created a prototype app and promotional materials to demonstrate the function of the device.
